Overflight & Landing Permits: What Aircraft Operators Need to Know

Overflight & Landing Permits

Regulatory requirements vary and change over time. They should be confirmed for each specific operation with the relevant authorities.

International flight operations require careful planning, particularly when crossing multiple countries with different aviation regulations.

Understanding permit requirements, preparing the correct documentation and coordinating approvals in advance can help prevent unnecessary delays.

Overflight vs. Landing Permits

An overflight permit authorizes an aircraft to cross a country's airspace without landing, where prior permission is required.

A landing permit authorizes an aircraft to land within a country, subject to applicable regulations.

Requirements vary depending on the country, aircraft registration, type of operation and applicable international agreements.

Importantly, an approved permit does not replace ATC clearance or other operational requirements.

What Information Is Required?

Although requirements differ between countries, authorities may request:

  • —Aircraft registration, type and MTOW.
  • —Operator details and AOC, where applicable.
  • —Certificate of Airworthiness and insurance documentation.
  • —Flight date, schedule and UTC timings.
  • —Planned routing, including FIR entry and exit points where required.
  • —Purpose of flight and cargo details, where applicable.

FIR Entry & Exit Points

Some countries require the specific points where an aircraft enters and exits their Flight Information Region (FIR).

Although not mandatory everywhere, providing this information in advance can help avoid delays.

Operators can simply send us their Operational Flight Plan (OFPL). Our OCC/OPS team will identify the relevant FIR entry and exit points from the planned routing whenever required.

How Long Does Approval Take?

Processing times vary significantly between countries.

Some permits may be issued within hours, while others require several working days. More complex authorizations can take longer.

Weekends, public holidays, time-zone differences and last-minute operational changes may also affect approval times.

Early coordination is always recommended, particularly for short-notice or complex operations.

When Operational Plans Change

Aircraft substitutions, schedule changes or revised routings may affect an existing authorization. Depending on the issuing authority, these changes may require an amendment, revalidation or a completely new application.

Effective permit coordination therefore requires continuous communication between the operator, the flight planning team and the relevant authorities.

Local Expertise Makes a Difference

In international aviation, local knowledge and established operational relationships can make a significant difference.

PRIMESLOT combines its operational expertise with an established network of trusted local partners in strategic locations worldwide, helping navigate country-specific procedures, facilitate local coordination and follow up on permit applications more efficiently.

This local expertise can be particularly valuable for time-sensitive operations, helping streamline communication and potentially reduce processing times, while all approvals remain subject to the relevant authorities.

24/7 Operational Support

Since 2008, PRIMESLOT Aviation Support has supported international flight operations, combining operational experience with worldwide coordination.

Our OCC/OPS team provides:

  • —Overflight and landing permit coordination.
  • —Applications and approval follow-up.
  • —Support for urgent and short-notice requests.
  • —Permit amendments following schedule, aircraft or routing changes.
  • —Coordination with local partners and relevant authorities.

Our involvement does not end when an application is submitted. We follow the process through to confirmation of approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do private (non-commercial) flights need overflight permits?

Requirements vary by country. Some states exempt private non-commercial flights, while others require prior authorization. The applicable rules should be verified for each state concerned.

Can an overflight permit be obtained at short notice?

In some countries, urgent applications may be considered, depending on the authority, flight purpose and operational circumstances. However, short-notice approval is never guaranteed. Early coordination remains the most reliable approach.

Does a permit guarantee my flight can operate?

No. A permit is one requirement among several — slots, handling, parking and ATC clearances are separate. Airspace can also close after a permit is issued (NOTAMs, geopolitical events), which is why permits remain under coordination until departure.

What happens if my schedule changes after approval?

Many permits are tied to specific dates, times or routings. Depending on the issuing authority, changes may require an amendment, revalidation or a new application.
